Overview:
The Great Idea Competition, hosted by the Stillwater Area Community Foundation, supports innovative community projects designed to strengthen and uplift the St. Croix River Valley region. Established in 2010, the Foundation pools gifts from individuals, families, and businesses to fund diverse needs including social services, arts, youth, education, and the environment. Unlike nonprofits with a singular focus, the Foundation takes a broad approach guided by community conversations, ensuring resources are directed toward pressing local challenges. By managing endowed funds, it guarantees long-term community impact while fostering creative solutions that enhance local quality of life.

Eligibility Criteria/General Requirement:
Project must benefit a community within the Stillwater Area Foundation’s service area: Bayport, Baytown Township, Grant, Lake Elmo, Marine on St. Croix, May Township (including Withrow), Oak Park Heights, Stillwater, or West Lakeland Township (north of Highway 94).
Applicants must be one of the following:
501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
Government entity
Tribal entity
Educational organization with tax-exempt status
Or partnered with an eligible fiscal agent.
Projects may include initiatives such as:
Beautifying streetscapes
Addressing environmental concerns
Improving quality of life for residents
Supporting underserved community members
Attracting visitors and engaging residents
Grant Requests Not Accepted:
Projects outside the listed service area
Applications without eligible nonprofit or fiscal sponsorship
Application Deadline: September 15, 2025
