Overview
The Research and Development program supports projects that address major challenges in preserving or providing access to humanities collections and resources. These challenges include:
Finding better ways to preserve materials critical to the nation’s cultural heritage, including fragile artifacts, manuscripts, analog recordings, and digital assets.
Developing advanced methods for organizing, searching, discovering, and using such materials.
The program supports projects at all stages of development, from early planning and stand-alone studies to advanced implementation. Outcomes may take various forms, such as:
Laboratory datasets
Guidelines for standards
Open access software tools
Workflow and equipment specifications
Widely used metadata schema
Other related products
The program covers all types of humanities collections, including moving image and sound recordings, archaeological artifacts, born-digital and time-based media, rare books and manuscripts, archival records, material culture, and art.
Areas of Special Interest
Research and Development projects are encouraged to focus on one or more of the following areas:
Advancing theory and practice in heritage collections work
Preserving audiovisual and digital heritage
Applying artificial intelligence to collections-based activities
Conserving material heritage
Protecting cultural heritage
Stewarding collections by and with underrepresented communities
Responding to climate change
Humanities Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence
This grant program is part of NEH’s Humanities Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence initiative, which supports research on the ethical, legal, and societal implications of AI. More details can be found on the NEH AI initiative page.
Eligibility Criteria/General Requirements
